A Police Inspector in Akwa Ibom State Police Command, who killed a commercial motorcyclist, over N20 is facing death by hanging, the Court of Appeal in Calabar has affirmed.

Inspector Moses Akpaete, who led a team of three other officers on patrol of Uyo metropolis, was said to have killed Felix Kenneth Akpan along Abak Road, Uyo on October 15, 2015.

The apex court, Tuesday, upheld the judgment of Justice Ifiok Ukana of Uyo High Court which had sentenced the police inspector to death.

This is as the Court of Appeal in Calabar dismissed the appeal filed by Stephen Anona who was sentenced to death by hanging for murder.

In a unanimous judgment, the Appeal Court, however, discharged and acquitted three other members of the patrol team: Inspector Idoko Sampson, Corporal Enobong Udo and Corporal Godwin Nnana on the grounds that though they were part of the patrol team, it was their leader, Inspector Akpaette who pulled the trigger that fired the bullet that killed the okada rider.

Anona, a native of Anambra State, murdered an Uyo-based barber, Daniel Solomon Bassey in 2015 and was sentenced to death by hanging in 2019 by an Akwa Ibom High Court.

The 37-year old Anona had approached the appellate court to stop the execution of the judgment of the Akwa Ibom High Court which in 2019, sentenced him to death by hanging.

In a unanimous decision, the appellate court upheld the judgment of Justice Ifiok Ukana and dismissed the appeal.

Anona is heading to the Supreme Court to challenge the decision of the Appeal Court.
