Nigerians have been charged to be wary of voting for Peoples Democratic Party, PDP that is bent to sell Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to the highest bidder would improve their economic well-being.
Senator Godswill Akpabio, who spoke to TVC NEWS in Abuja on Monday, urged the South South people to reconsider their stand in planning to vote for the party that wants to sell the corporation and its assets.
Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential Candidate has vowed if voted into power to sell NNPC to break what he called ‘mafia’ in the corporation.
Akpabio who is representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District in the Senate said “Why do the South-South people want to vote for a president who wants to sell NNPC? The corporation has provided many jobs for Nigerians including the South-South people working there.
“If the sale is done, then we will be the losers because crude oil is drilled from the South-South soil and we enjoy more dividends of the oil.
“The then government sold ALSCON in Ikot Abasi, NNMC in Oku Iboku all in Akwa Ibom State. And today our people are jobless because those companies have closed shops.”
Recall that the National Council on Privatisation presided over by Atiku Abubakar under ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo administration sold ALSCON and NNMC to interested bidders. Though ALSCON was working then but went comatose after the sale, NNMC was moribund as at the time it was bided and sold.
The Senator who is also the National Coordinator of the Presidential Support Committee, noted “President Muhammadu Buhari has refunded billions of naira as Paris Club and on Federal roads I built when I was a governor to Akwa Ibom government.
“I tried as a governor to get the refunds under the PDP government, but the money was never refunded to me.”
