A detachment of Nigeria Police Force has continued to lay siege on the major routes leading to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in Uyo, the state capital.
The continued siege that started Wednesday following fear of perceived attack by suspected hoodlums has created more apprehension among some members of the public and staffers of the house.
Trouble is said to have started on Monday when some hoodlums besieged the house premises to forment trouble for fear that the emergency plenary of the house was plotted to declare the seats of some members of the house who defected from Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to All Progressives Congress, APC, vacant.
Though security agents dispersed them, more trouble came in sacthets when Onofiok Luke, the speaker of the house eventually declared the seats of five APC members vacant, thus heightening more anxiety among the affected.
The five sacked lawmakers, in turn, regrouped and elected their “speaker” and announced “removal” of the “former speaker.”
To prevent a breakdown of law and order, the police moved in and used three pick up fans to block the entrance of the house from Udo Udoma Avenue and Christ Embassy Church from Nsikak Eduok Avenue.
Behind the Amusement Park leading to Insight Bible Church, Uyo is equally blocked to check any infiltration by any staff or members of the public to the the state assembly premises.
Consequently, some house members, personal aides to the members and staffers of the state assembly are barred from entering their offices for two days now.
The sprawling house with imposing edifices and spacious fields is desolate and looks orphaned as birds fly around and games dance about the premises unperturbed.
The police men with corked guns were vigilant and mobile watching out for any eventuality to quell the situation.
One of the security operatives told Straightnews that since “we moved in here yesterday (Wednesday), there was no directive for them to dismantle the road-block and return to their respective duty posts.”
On Wednesday, the Nigerian Senate passed a resolution giving the Senate Committee on Police Affairs 48 hours to look into the police barricade of the house.
This was sequel to a motion of urgent importance brought to the Senate by Senator Bassey Albert Akpan representing Uyo Senatorial District.
Before this time, Adams Oshiohmole, the APC National Chairman had condemned attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State to intimidate the opposition party.
Governor Udom Emmanuel who returned to the state on Wednesday expressed displeasure over the statement credited to the APC National Chairman, saying that he was not properly informed about the true situation of the crisis.
