Zimbabweans have poured into the streets of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital to celebrate the fall of their 93-year-old despotic ruler, Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe who assumed political power since the country gained independence in 1980 has contested many elections and won overwhelmingly.
Though Mugabe has consistently declared that he remains the ruler of the country decimated by poverty and hunger, men, women, children and even soldiers celebrated the ousting of the despot.
Many were seen waving flags, singing and dancing along the streets in celebration of the impending impasse that has made his future uncertain in the emerging political future of Zimbabwe.
“These are tears of joy,” the 34-year-old Frank Mutsindikwa told Reuters, declaring “I have waiting for this day in my life. Free at last. We are free at last.”
Two days, Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of Zimbabwe’s Opposition Movement for Democratic Change, also called on Mugabe to resign without delay.
However, Mugabe would not resign without a fight. “I am ready to die for what is correct,” he proclaimed. According to his nephew, Patrick Zhuwao was spoke to Reuters from South Africa, said the President had hardly slept since the military took over power from him few days ago.
