Four persons died in an auto crash at Itam Junction in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State when a heavy duty truck capsized and crushed them in a tricycle.

The accident occurred Monday about 5.15 p.m. when the driver of the truck coming from Ikot Ekpene Road lost control as he negotiated a bend at the junction.

An eyewitness said the truck, which was loaded with cartons of beer wanted to go back to Ikot Ekpene Road hit the pavement, skidded off the road and landed on the tricycle wanting to go to Idoro Road in Uyo.

According to the eyewitness, none of the occupants could escape from the doomed tricycle as the accident took everybody by surprise.

“It was a sad day. We saw the tricycle but in a twitch, the people just died like chickens. The truck suddenly fell on the people. No space of time to rescue the victims as they were all gone,” he bemoaned.

The eye witness further lamented, “All the beer crates and content fell on the four people. It was a terrifying sight as the dead were squeezed like bread. Blood flowed like water. In fact, passersby control their tears.”

By the time StraightNews reporter reached the scene of the accident, the wreckage had been cleared to allow for traffic flow. However, the reporter saw traces of blood and the ill-fated tricycle at the scene.

However, DSP Bala Elkana, the Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom State in a telephone interview said the state police command was not aware of such incident.
