Ahead of the October 31 local government elections in Akwa Ibom, Peoples Democratic Party has given 50 chairmanship aspirants green light to contest the August 24 Local Government Congress in the state.

After the bell rung for the local government race, 142 persons vied for chairmanship and bought nomination forms that cost N2.5 million each.

Monday, August 17, the party released list of 70 qualified aspirants and asked the aggrieved to go the Appeal Panels set up to thrash out their grievances.

Meanwhile, the State Working Committee of PDP, Akwa Ibom State has approved Monday, August 24, 2020 as the reviewed date for the conduct of the Local Government Congress to elect Chairmanship candidates across the 31 Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State.

The Ward Congress for the selection of councillorship aspirants for the 368 electoral wards in the state was held Thursday, August 19.

To assuage the aggrieved chairmanship aspirants, PDP announced Barr. Uwemedimoh Nwoko – Chairman; Mr. Census Ekpu, Dr. Glory Edet, Hon. Kufre Edidem, Dr. Nsidibe Akata and Hon. Harrison Ekpo as Secretary members to sit on appeals of aggrieved aspirants.

Though the result of the appeal panel that sat on Friday, August 21, 2020 at the PDP Secretariat, Atan Offot, Uyo is yet to be made public, the State Working Committee of PDP, has fixed Monday, August 24, 2020 for the conduct of the Local Government Congress to elect Chairmanship aspirants in the 31 local government areas.

According to Obong Udo Ekpenyong, the State PDP Chairman, the review in date became necessary as the result of the earlier shift in the date for the conduct of the Ward Congresses and other preparations that needed to be put in place.

Earlier, he had stated “Consequent upon an armada of new petitions received by the Party arising from the earlier published list of cleared Chairmanship aspirants, the State Working Committee of PDP had empowered the Appeal Panels that sat on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 to apart from hearing fresh cases of appeal arising from the published list, also conduct a holistic review of the list of cleared Chairmanship aspirants earlier released.

“Aspirants who have not been cleared in this final list but have any grievance to ventilate are to appear before an Appeal Panel to address the issues arising therefrom,” he advised.

The final list of cleared aspirants is as follows:
