As fall-out of the ongoing drama at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, men of the Nigeria Police Force have taken over the premises of the complex, preventing staffers and lawmakers from gaining access to their offices.
Currently, the main entrance of the building was under lock and keys while hundreds of policemen as well as men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp were seen blocking the roads that lead to the complex.
When Straightnews visited the place, some staffers of the house were seen standing in small groups near the Mboho Mkparawa Hall at Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo barricaded by the security operatives to discuss the unexpected incident.
Recall that there was an emergency plenary on Monday, November 19, 2018, in which speaker of the house, Onofiok Luke declarared five lawmakers’ seats vacant.
Consequently, the embattled five lawmakers held another plenary to impeach the speaker of the house, Mr. Onofiok Luke by electing Mr Nse Ntuen as their new Speaker.
The two factional speaker, however, fixed today Wednesday, 21 November, 2018 for sitting. This might have been the reason behind the ongoing siege in the Assembly premises to forstall a breakdown of law amd order.
As at the time of filing this report, DSP Odiko MacDon, the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, did not take or return our calls.
