As their 27th wedding anniversary bells tolled again on October 3, Barack and Michelle Obama shared fondest moments laced with touching tributes on the social media.
Barack Obama, the 44th US President from 2009 to 2017 posted a photo of himself and his wife gazing at the sunset. In his Twitter handle, he penned “Like the Beatles said: It’s getting better all the time,” he writes. “Thanks, babe, for 27 amazing years!”
In return, Michelle Obama hit back the love with a heartfelt post of her own. She wrote too “27 years ago, this guy promised me a life full of adventure. I’d say he’s delivered,” she writes. “Here’s to our next chapter of becoming empty nesters and discovering what’s next—while still feeling the magic that brought us together all those years ago. Happy anniversary, Barack.”
Obama met his wife (then Michelle Robinson) in 1989 at a Chicago Law Firm where she was assigned to be his mentor.
One month later, he asked her out on a date. Though apprehensive, Mrs. Obama agreed for lunch and a movie. After dating for a few years, they became engaged and wedded on October 3, 1992. The Obamas have two daughters: Malia, 21 and Sasha, 18.
Back in July, Mrs. Obama graced the ESSENCE Festival stage, speaking with host Gayle King about her relationship with the former President and what sustained them through the stress and pressure of being in the White House.
“Marriage is a choice you make every day,” she explained. “You don’t do it because it’s easy. You do it because you believe in it. You believe in the other person.”
She also dropped some relationship advice about marrying your equal. “My husband is my teammate. If we are going to win this game together, he has to be strong and he has to be OK with me being strong. I do not want a weak player on my team, nor does he.”
