The heavy downpour of Saturday has wreaked untold havocs in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital and its environs.

The rains which started after 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, was accompanied by heavy thunderstorm.

Like Tsunami, the thunderstorm went beserk, randomly pulling down such economic trees as plantain trees, banana, pear trees and cassava, among others.

Virtually, major roads, streets and avenues in Uyo were flooded and rendered impassable by verocious running water.

While many residents of houses and businesses along flood-prone areas were crying, owners of economic trees were seen gnashing their teeth.

Straightnews reporter said some residents in parts of Uyo were rendered homeless by the flood, which has become a perennial problem in the state capital.

Unexpectedly, the private residence of Governor Udom Emmanuel in Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo along F-Line was submerged by flood after Saturday’s downpour.

A video which surfaced online shows how the street was flooded, while the security post adjacent his house, the environs and the main entrance to the governor’s residence were inaccessible.

The huge water menaced into the expansive compound housing palatial buildings, seeping the intimidating fence and hauling in the beautifully designed pavement and grassy field.

Passers-by and motorists of the street were seen swaggering the flooded street but riveting on the governor’s residence trespassed by the ‘unwelcome visitor.’

To residents and visitors alike, flood is a common phenomenon in Uyo Municipality and its environs.

Before now, flooding has had full mastery of Wellington Bassey Way, IBB Avenue, Abak Road, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat leading to Accountant-General’s Office, Atan Offot, Mechanics’ Village, Atiku Abubakar Avenue, Ikot Ekpene Road, Nkemba Street, Port Harcourt Street, Shelter Afrique and Osong Ama Estate, among others.

Though Akwa Ibom government budgeted N20 billion as Ecological Funds in the 2019 budget, it has raised the funds to N21 billion in the next year’s financial year.
