Akwa Ibom State is leading in the COVID-19 Delta Variant in four Nigerian states with 32 cases, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed.

The NCDC Director-General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, stated this during a resumed briefing of the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on Monday, August 2, in Abuja.

”Out of Lagos, Cross River, Oyo states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Akwa Ibom State has the highest number of cases as it has recorded 19,’’ according to Ihekweazu.

The other states mentioned has recorded at least one case of the Delta variant of COVID-19, the NCDC boss said.

Speaking also at the briefing, the Minister for Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, expressed worry over the variant which has been ravaging other countries but has now come into Nigeria.

He warned the public against travelling to Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Cross River, Kano, Plateau States including the FCT except when necessary.

The briefing witnessed the official handing over of more than four million doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to Nigeria by the United States.

However, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)  has to certify the vaccines for use before they are distributed.

Receiving the vaccines, the PSC Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, thanked the US government for the donation, noting that it came at a time when Nigeria had started recording about 500 COVID-19 cases daily.
