Hosts Cameroon, Saturday, won the third-place medal in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2021, after beating Burkina Faso 5-3 on penalties.

The match, which took place at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé, entered penalty after the two sides drew 3-3 at the end of full time.

This was the second time the hosts Cameroon met with Burkina Faso in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Unlike when they met in the group stage, this time the Bronze medal was at stake to crown the team which finished third for AFCON 2021.

When both teams met the first meet at the opening fixture of the soccer tournament, Indomitable Lions came from behind to defeat Stallions 2-1 at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.

Hosts Cameroon wanted to compensate their countrymen after losing 3-1 on penalties to Egypt during the semi-final stanza.

The wounded Indomitable Lions had played two, third-place play-off match – but won one and lost the other.

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso were all out to revenge and to ensure they did not lose to Cameroon two times on the same competition.

Coach Kamou Malo was confident of the progress the Stallions made, despite their 3-1 semi-final loss to Senegal. It was the third time Burkina Faso had made to the semi-final in the last four AFCON tournament.

The Stallions had hoped to secure another third-place finish which they finished in the 2017 AFCON when they beat Ghana 1-0.
