Social media in Nigeria buzzed over the comical dressing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate, Kashim Shettima in Lagos State.
Unlike his usual babaringa, Shettima wore a pair of sneakers and did not unbutton his blazer at the opening ceremony of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Colloquium annual general conference on Monday.
The former Borno State governor represented the APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the NBA’s 62nd Annual General Conference held at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Netizens blamed Shettima, a former banker, former Borno State Governor, and Senator, representative of the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, for appearing in a blazer that looks oversize on a pair of sneaker footwear.
Netizens also say he made the situation worse by not unbuttoning his blazer when he sat.
The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, came to the NBA conference in his signature senator outfit, but this time a grey colour, not the usual black.
Obi was received at the venue of the conference with a rousing welcome by participants of the seven days event holding at the Eko Atlantic Hotel in Lagos.
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, came in a dark colour suit on a white shirt and red tie to match.
As reactions trail the comical fashion, some social media users have created the #ShettimaChallenge and surprisingly, Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo has also joined in the challenge.
Dressed in a black suit, red tie and a pair of sneakers, Keyamo wrote, “Now, since they think the issues of Nigeria are three buttons, a pair of sneakers and a long tie, let’s help make them the real issues!”
@General_Oluchi said: “Atiku’s suit is clean and he looks well put together at the conference. Shettima should collect the phone number of Atiku’s designer. Shettima should have worn agbada, an outfit he feels more comfortable in.”
@shedrachjoshua4 said: “Someone said shettima must have changed his clothes in a car booth just like the fake bishops did.”
@adeyanjuCruise said: “Shettima just went to NBA Conference to humiliate himself. Simple dress sense tells a man in suit to unbutton his blazer when he sits. And again he always look scary to me sha.”
@Odogwu_Nomso said: “Fashion Designer do Shettima this one.”
@Elkrosmediahub said: “If you think Shettima wearing the suit and tie with sneakers was improper, consider he had all three buttons done while seated to.”
Among the speakers at the NBA conference included novelist, Chimanda Ngozi Adichie, who delivered a keynote address, and Kaelo Ajuluchukwu, Associate General Counsel at META, formerly Facebook, AB Mahmoud, a senior advocate of Nigeria and Abimbola Akeredolu, also a senior advocate of Nigeria.
Meanwhile, former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted to the buzz on social media over the outfit of Kashim Shettima.
For many social media users, Shettima, a former banker, and former Borno State Governor who represented the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, at the NBA conference, looked awkward in an oversize blazer on a pair of sneakers.
One Twitter user @General_Oluchi wrote: “Atiku’s suit is clean and he looks well put together at the conference. Shettima should collect the phone number of Atiku’s designer. Shettima should have worn agbada, an outfit he feels more comfortable in.”
Many have recreated a photo of Shettima seating with his jacket buttoned up.
Fani-Kayode wrote on Twitter on Tuesday that Shettima’s eloquence should have been the focus at the NBA conference instead of his outfit.
“Instead of appreciating the brilliance and profundity of his passion, eloquence, intellect, knowledge and delivery some are obsessing about his suit, tie and shoes!” he wrote.
Fani-Kayode added that Shettima did the APC proud with his performance.
“Congrats to my friend and brother His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima, Nigeria’s incoming Vice President, for a superlative performance at the NBA conference yesterday! You did us proud!” he added.
