The remains of three persons who died along Itu-Uyo Road in Akwa Ibom have been deposited in a nearby mortuary in the state.

It was gathered that a Mack truck with registration number KMM 412 XA had a head-on collision with a tricycle (Keke) with registration number ETN 815 WR.

Two out of the three adult females and the one male in the tricycle were confirmed dead while a female sustained injury in the accident that occurred Saturday, October 21, 2023 at about 0555hrs.

Reacting to the ugly incident, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps Akwa Ibom State, Matthew O. Olonisaye said as soon as the report of the incident was received, the FRSC operatives mobilized and moved swiftly to the location.

‘‘Upon arrival at the crash scene, the injured was moved to a nearby hospital for prompt medical attention while the deceased were deposited at a morgue,’’ he stated.

Straightnews gathered that after immediate evacuation of the victims, the Corps cleared road of the wreckages for free-flow of traffic.

The newspapers also learnt that shortly after the accident, the driver of the Mack truck abandoned the vehicle on the middle of the road and fled for fear of reprisal attack.

An eye witness blamed the cause of the crash on the tricyclist over speeding and both vehicles for inadequate lighting systems to enhance clear visibility.

But, a press release by Paul O. James, SRC (Public Enlightenment) for Sector Commander describing the incident as unfortunate commiserated with the families of the deceased.

He wished the injured quick recovery, and enjoined road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules to avoid lost of lives and properties.

He noted that the incident could have been avoided if the people had taken into cognizance: Safety Precautions, and not giving occasion to abuse of the privileges of having good road without adherence to traffic rules and regulations.

The Corps, according to him, has continually sensitised and enlightened motorists on safe road use culture to avert such incidences of road carnages.

The Sector Commander used the occasion to warn road users against all such negligent attitude that undermines the safety of all road users as any life lost could not be recovered.

While reiterating the need for safety consciousness among drivers and riders, he advised all against excessive speeding, indiscriminate parking, inadequacy of lighting systems, distracted driving, night time travel, drunk driving, non-adherence to traffic rules among others.

Olonisaye further urged road users to be extremely cautious about the foggy weather, while using the roads during early hours of the day due to poor visibility.
