Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS) ended a one-day strategy session with plans to generate a revenue of N60 billion to boost the state budget in 2024.

In 2022, Akwa Ibom State collected more than N35 billion Internally Generated Revenue, and was ranked 10th on the States’ IGR ranking table as published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in October 2023.

AKIRS’ target, as stated at the strategy session held on Tuesday 19 December, is to exceed N60 billion in the 2024 fiscal year, and to ensure the government has sufficient funds to implement the ARISE Agenda of the state government.

Other strategies reached at the session presided over by the Executive Chairman of the Board, Mr Okon Okon included massive tax sensitisation campaigns, full automation and digitisation of tax processes, strategic capacity building, expansion of taxpayers’ database and leveraging Akwa-GIS for land-related revenue.

Recall that AKIRS intensified its tax sensitisation campaigns in the fourth quarter of 2023 through road show, radio programmes, media briefings, and inauguration of tax club at the University of Uyo, among other strategic enlightenment programmes.

Specifically, Akwa Ibom State IGR has been on the upward trajectory since the inception of this present board from an all-time high of about N16 billion annual figure in 2017, N33 billion in 2019 to about N35 billion in 2022.
