Abia State Governor, Mr. Alex Otti has revolutionized the construction of the hitherto deplorable internal routes in Aba, the commercial hub of the state.

Most of the roads are being constructed by Julius Berger Construction Company.

In his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Otti wrote ‘‘Yesterday, I visited Aba, in the company of some members of my team, to inspect the ongoing road projects at Port Harcourt Road, Old Court Road, Ndoki Road and Omuma Road.

‘‘We were impressed with the progress of work on Port Harcourt Road. The contractor, Julius Berger Plc, has assured us that the road will be ready for use by December 2024.’’

According to the governor, ‘‘We also have plans to dualise Omuma Road and link it with Old Express Road, Cemetery and Osusu Roads. This will be activated once the relocation of the electricity line is completed. Ndoki Road will also be completed in record time. We expect a marked improvement on the road before this year’s rainy season.

‘‘The construction will extend to the Good Morning Market as well as Old Court Road and adjoining streets.

‘‘We are grateful to the residents of Aba, who welcomed us warmly and expressed their appreciation for the work we are doing. We appreciate their cooperation and kindness to the contractors and workers. They have demonstrated that they are true partners in progress and development.

‘‘We also seized the opportunity to appeal to them to maintain good sanitary habits and keep their environment clean and healthy. As we complete these roads, we will not tolerate littering and dumping of refuse on the roadsides or in drainages. We are providing waste bins for households and business owners, so they can dispose of their waste properly,’’ the 58 year-old governor added.

Recall that Otti in November 2023 vowed to expand and improve the outlook of all roads leading into the state to mark it out from its neighbours.

“Every entry point into Abia will look different; be it Owerrinta, OnuImo, Umudike, or Njeghese near Onitcha Ngwa, anywhere you are approaching Abia from, once you enter Abia, you will know that you have entered Abia,’’ he pledged.

Meanwhile, Abia State ministry of environment has banned the use of Styrofoam foils, popularly known as ‘Take Away’.

The ministry in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna on Saturday, said the use of the product as food containers has been banned in the state.

He noted that ”Take Away” had earlier been banned in some states, including Lagos and therefore, advised the public to immediately discontinue the use of the foils until investigations are fully carried out on the dangers of the product to public health.

However, some defaulters were on Saturday, arrested and sanctioned in Umuahia during the January 2024 Clean Up exercise in the State.

The defaulters, who were arrested in some parts of the State capital during the environmental sanitation hours, were caught either trading or loitering, in contravention of the government’s earlier orders.

The clean up recorded a high level of compliance as many residents cleaned their gutters, while trucks provided by the State government evacuated generated wastes.
