Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has directed Transition Chairmen of the 31 Local Government Areas in the State to submit their achievements in the last six months in office.

The directive came four days after Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly had received a letter from Governor Umo Eno seeking the extension of the tenure of Transition Chairmen in the state.

Clerk of the House, Nsikak-Abasi Orok who read the letter dated May 7, 2024 quoted the Governor requesting for an extension of interim administration to enable the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) conduct fresh elections for Local Government executive members.

A press release signed by Ekerete Udoh, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, said ‘‘The verifiable achievements recorded will enable effective and more robust planning for the next phase of governance.

‘‘Their scorecard should be channeled through the Office of the Honourable Commissioner for Local and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Frank Archibong, and must reach His Excellency, the Governor, on or before May 20, 2024.’’

House to carry out oversight function on LG Transition Committees

Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has declined to pass a resolution granting the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno’s request for extension of tenure of the Local Government Transition Committees in the state for six months.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Udeme Otong during a plenary session last Thursday, said that the House would not pass a resolution until it has carried out an oversight function by assessing the activities of the Chairmen in the last five months in the 31 local government areas of the state

According to the Speaker, “It would be necessary for the House to first carry out an inspection of the activities of the local government councils and assess their performances, since there are currently no elected councilors to perform this function.”

The House took the decision through a motion moved by the Chief Whip and member representing Mbo State Constituency, Rt. Hon Effiong Johnson and seconded by Oruk Anam State Constituency representative, Hon Samuel Idiong.

To this end, he has mandated the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, headed by Rt. Hon. Mfon Idung to lead a facility tour across the 31 local government areas of the state to assess the performances of the sitting officials before granting tenure extension to them.

Recall that Akwa Ibom Governor Eno swore in the transition members of various local government areas on December 7, 2023 and are expected to be dissolved on June 7, 2024.
