The Nigeria Labour Congress Chairperson, Akwa Ibom Council, Comrade Sunny James has reassured of workers’ resolve to remain united, committed, and inspired to building a peaceful, productive, and prosperous state.
Speaking during the annual inter-denominational thanksgiving service at Full Life Christian Centre, Uyo on Sunday, James said a moment like that affords the workforce in the State the opportunity to take stock of God’s benevolence and protection of workers in the state.
Comrade James, while chronicling the genesis of May Day, stated that the 2026 edition would be his last in his capacity as the State NLC boss.

He used the opportunity to call on workers across the State to come out en masse to celebrate this 2026 Workers’ Day- a day set aside to honour the dignity, resilience, and invaluable contributions of the workforce to the growth of the State.
Flanked by Comrade Kingsley Akpan, the State Trade Union Congress Chairman, Sunny James expressed optimism that God will continue to sustain the public service, while praying for better remuneration and workers friendly environment in the near future.
The State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno said the service offers the government and indeed civil servants in the State a moment of deep gratitude to God for His faithfulness to the people the State in granting peace, stability and a thriving labour environment built on mutual respect and understanding.
Eno, who spoke through Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Development, Elder Ikoedem Ekong, expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for their unwavering cooperation and commitment to industrial harmony.
He expressed his deep commitment to the welfare of workers and retirees, including prompt and consistent payment of salaries, settlement of pension and gratuity backlogs and the implementation of people-centered policies, adding that his administration will continue to place workers at the heart of governance.
The Senior Pastor of Full Life Christian Centre, Rev. Ntia I. Ntia in his message taken from Rev 5:6-13 admonished civil servants in the State to put service before pay, and cautioned them against worldly greed.
Speaking on the theme of May Day’s event: Insecurity, Poverty- Bane of Decent work, Rev. Ntia reminded civil servants of the essence of thanking God for the little things in their life. Doing so, he said will attract open doors for greater things their career.
Ntia reminded the worshippers that through divine wisdom, strength, and faith, the citizens can overcome poverty and lack, and rise to greater heights as individuals and as a State.
The high point of the service was the thanksgiving proper, where the civil servants in their numbers filed out with songs of praise and adoration to glorify God for sustaining them throughout their service years.
