Akwa Ibom government has unfolded plans to commence cargo operations at the Akwa Ibom International Airport, Uyo soon.
Governor Udom Emmanuel stated this during an interaction with Government House Press, Uyo shortly on arrival from national engagements in Abuja at the Ibom International Airport, Uyo.
Emmanuel stated that the entire Niger Delta Region is due for logistics operations both by air and sea, noting that “We can’t just wait any longer. We want to see how we can start cargo operations here, almost immediately.”
He expressed he hope that Nigerian Air Force to collaborate with his administration and universities in the state to utilise facilities at the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul, MRO, section of the airport would come to fruition.
The State Chief Executive, however, assured that modalities have been put in place to commence cargo services through the Ibom deep seaport, saying that the take-off of the project would decongest traffic at the Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports.
According to the Governor, “Akwa Ibom State currently boasts of an existing 17.3 metres of natural draught waiting to be tapped for seaport services”, calling on the federal government to provide the enabling environment for full logistic operations at both ports in the state.
