The Akwa Ibom Children’s Parliament has sought inclusion in the budgeting process to help them to make meaningful inputs on matters affecting the welfare of children in the state.

The Speaker of the Children’s Parliament, Miss Rhoda Vincent made the call during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration held at Uyo Township Stadium under the theme Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child.

Doing this, Miss Vincent explained, would allow the members of the parliament selected from the 31 local government areas of the state to identify specific areas of need in such relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies as Women Affairs and Social Welfare,  Education and Youth Development Ministries, before the passage of the State budget  into law by the State Assembly.

While thanking the State Government for child inclusion in politics and policies that affects their lives, like the free healthcare programme for children from zero to five years, the free education programme and provision of shelter and care for vulnerable children, Miss Vincent urged the government to invest in digital literacy and grant equal opportunities to children at the grassroots.

The teenager reiterated the need for protection of street children, while calling on the State Government to increase funding to child protection institutions and Non- Governmental Organisations, adding that such will enhance greater collaboration to end street hawking and other forms of child labour.

Addressing the Children, the representative of the State Governor, Prof Ubong Umoh said the day, set aside to honour the next generation and champion equal access to quality education, healthcare, and digital skills for all kids, usually give government the opportunity to assess its performance in catering for the welfare of children in the State.

Prof Umoh, who is the State Commissioner for Education, described the theme for this year’s celebration, as apt, as it emphasizes the need to promote a culture of inclusivity, protection and investment in the wellbeing of Akwa Ibom children for a brighter future.

Describing Pastor Umo Eno as compassionate father and lover of children, he explained that the State Governor  has in line with ARISE Agenda programme, prioritised the welfare and education of Akwa Ibom State Children, reiterating the interest of the State government to do more in granting equal opportunity for them to grow and thrive like their counterparts in the country.

He equally listed the introduction of free medical care for children aged 0 to five years among other laudable achievements recorded to underscore the government’s commitment to building a strong foundation for the future of Akwa Ibom State.

Earlier in her address, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Inibehe Etukudo, had described the children’s day as a special occasion dedicated to celebrating Akwa Ibom children, who are the pride of the society and the leaders of tomorrow.

“It is also an opportunity to reflect on our collective responsibility to nurture, protect and empower them to become responsible and productive citizens, because the future of every nation depends greatly on the care, guidance and values imparted to its children today” she stated.

Speaking further she said “It is a commitment anchored on the conviction that every Nigerian child and indeed every Akwa Ibom child matters and deserves the opportunity to thrive, irrespective of gender or socio-economic background.”

The Commissioner said she was proud to state that, under the visionary and compassionate leadership of Governor Umo Eno, the State Government has continued to demonstrate unwavering commitment to the welfare and development of children in the state.

One of the most impactful achievements of this administration is the provision of free, compulsory and qualitative education for children in primary and post-primary schools, which has significantly improved access to learning while reducing the financial burden on families.

She encouraged the children to remain focused, disciplined and committed to their education and personal growth. “Dream big, work hard and always believe in yourselves, for you are the leaders of tomorrow.

“I also celebrate and commend all responsible parents, caregivers, teachers and stakeholders gathered here today, who continue to play vital roles in nurturing our children towards becoming responsible and productive members of society. I encourage you all to continue your good work” she concluded.

The Commissioner assured the children that the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare remains fully committed to promoting the rights, welfare and holistic development of every child in Akwa Ibom State, while wishing them a happy Children’s Day celebration.

The event featured match past competition from participating schools and the winners that emerged from both primary and secondary school categories received certificates and cash prizes.
