Following frequent clashes between farmers and herdsmen, Ukanafun Local Government Council in Akwa Ibom has stopped indiscriminate movement of livestock aimed at destroying crops in farmlands in the area.
A press release by the Chairman of the Transition Committee of Ukanafun Local Government Council, Elder Godwin Sunday Ekpe, July 12, 2024 said it was a decisive move to enhance public safety and curb criminal activities.
The release explained that the Chairman prohibited the indiscriminate movement of livestock on farmlands, which has been causing significant destruction to farm crops, saying ‘‘This step is crucial to preserving the agricultural integrity and food security of the area.’’

In addition, the council also slammed immediate ban on the sale and purchase of scrap within the local government area.
‘‘This measure is aimed at reducing theft incidents and ensuring the protection of public and private properties.
‘‘The ban, effective immediately, applies to all forms of scrap materials, including but not limited to metal, plastic, and electronic waste.
‘‘The decision was taken after extensive consultations with security agencies and community leaders, who have expressed concern over the rising cases of theft linked to the scrap trade.’’
According to him, ‘‘He observed a disturbing trend where stolen items are being sold as scraps. This not only affects the victims but also undermines the security and economic stability of our community.’’
The Chairman, therefore, warned to prosecute anyone found violating these bans.
‘‘Law enforcement agencies have been directed to enforce these bans rigorously and to carry out regular checks to ensure compliance.
‘‘The Chairman Transition Committee urges all residents and businesses to adhere to these new regulations and cooperate with the authorities to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
‘‘Community members are encouraged to report any violations of these bans to the nearest law enforcement agency,’’ the release stated.
