Akwa Ibom State recorded a significant drop in the number of students who registered and sat West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the state for three years.

This is despite the free and compulsory education supposedly provided by the state government in primary and secondary schools.

Presenting the report to the State Executive Council of Akwa Ibom government on Thursday, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet, the State Commissioner for Education, said the total number of those who took the examination from 2019 to 2021 were 54,171, 52,207 and 51,771 respectively.

The council held at Government House, Uyo was presided over by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The Commissioner, ”The percentage of candidates who passed with credits in five subjects or more, including -English Language and Mathematics were 58.55(2019), 68.05(2020), 78.90(2021).

However, the SEC members received and deliberated on the report exhaustively.

While the council members commended the Commissioner for the upward performance of the candidates, they charged her to improve the performance in the future examinations.

Earlier, the Governor had welcomed members from the Christmas break and reminded that Government cannot afford to go on vacation, as government must work round the clock.

He reviewed the security situation in the state and briefed Council on the steps taken to beef up security throughout the end of year and New Year season.

He further charged members to double their efforts in quality service delivery of all projects and policies under their care.
