Akwa Ibom State Government has renewed call for collective action against domestic and gender-based violence (GBV), gingering civil society organisations, religious bodies, traditional institutions and mass media to join the fight.

Making the call during a public presentation of Beyond the Poise, a novel authored by Mrs. Eme Atakpo, at the Patience Umo Eno Auditorium of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Uyo, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Lady Helen Eno-Obareki, reiterated her commitment to intensify the fight against the social vices.

Eno-Obareki observed that its launch during Gender-Based Violence Awareness month in Akwa Ibom State underscores its significance and aligns with broader efforts to confront domestic abuse and related social challenges.

She described the book as a timely and courageous contribution to the ongoing fight against domestic violence and the protection of vulnerable persons.

According to her, the timing of the book launch is strategic and symbolic, serving to deepen public awareness and strengthen advocacy against all forms of abuse.

“Domestic violence remains one of the most pervasive yet underreported violations of human rights in our society. Behind many calm faces and composed appearances lie untold stories of pain, fear and silent suffering. This is why a book like Beyond the Poise is not just timely but necessary,” she said.

As Chairperson of the State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee, Lady Eno-Obareki commended the author’s decision to dedicate part of the proceeds from the book launch to supporting survivors of domestic violence, rape and other vulnerable individuals.

She noted that the gesture aligns with the vision of the Patience Umo Eno Golden Initiative For All (GIFA), which prioritises the welfare of vulnerable groups and family development.

Reflecting on the storyline, she recalled the experiences of the book’s central character, Lizzy, whose journey from a seemingly ideal marriage into an abusive relationship mirrors the realities faced by many women.

Describing the novel as a powerful narrative of resilience, survival, friendship and empowerment, she noted that it raises critical questions about recognising abusive relationships and seeking help before situations become fatal.

The Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence through strengthened legal and institutional frameworks, particularly the enforcement of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law.

She assured that the State GBV Management Committee would continue collaborating with stakeholders to ensure survivors have access to justice, rehabilitation and support services.

Commenting on GIFA’s interventions, she recapped the successful partnership between GIFA and the United Nations Population Fund, which provided skills acquisition training and starter packs to 20 survivors of gender-based violence.

For survivors of abuse, Lady Eno-Obareki urged them not to suffer in silence,  saying “You are not alone. Your stories matter, your voices are relevant, and help is available. There is hope, and there are people and institutions ready to stand with you.”

The author of the novel, Mrs. Eme Atakpo stated that Beyond the Poise was inspired by the painful realities of domestic violence and rape, as well as the experiences of victims whose voices are often silenced.

Mrs Atakpo, who is a journalist, explained that the novel was written to stimulate conversations, encourage survivors to speak out and promote justice for victims.

Mrs. Akaninyene Udo, President of WALGON in Akwa Ibom State, and Prof. Imaobong Akpan, immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Uyo delivered goodwill messages.

Both speakers commended the author for drawing attention to the plight of victims of abuse and stressed the need for sustained awareness campaigns and stronger collaboration among stakeholders.

The event, chaired by Professor Enobong Ikpeme, featured the official unveiling of the 382-page novel by the President of Lutheran Chuch of Nigeria, Most Rev. Christian Ekong, who congratulated Mrs. Atakpo for using literature as a tool for social change.

Among dignitaries present at the event were Dr. Itoro Etim, member representing Uruan State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly; Dr. Offiong Offor, Commissioner for Agriculture; Mrs. Enobong Edidem, wife of the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly; and Mrs. Grace Umoh, wife of the Commissioner for Education.

Participants at the book launch renewed calls for stronger advocacy, public awareness and community support aimed at eliminating gender-based violence and ensuring safer homes and communities across Akwa Ibom State.
