Akwa United secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Kwara United in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture on Sunday, despite the home side dominating possession at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl of the Godwin Agbazika Innih Stadium, Ilorin.
The Promise Keepers occupy 17th position with 34 points from 30 matches, still at the edge of the dreaded relegation zone.
Kwara United, who created several scoring chances in the first half, were left ruing their wastefulness in front of goal.
Their situation worsened when Segun Adekunle received a straight red card for impeding a goal-bound attack, reducing the home side to 10 men.
Osoba Kabir and Uche Sebastine were on the scoresheet to ensure the Promise Keepers kept their survival hopes alive and extended their unbeaten run to four games.
Despite efforts from Coach Tunde Sanni’s side to mount a comeback, including the introduction of Wasiu Jimoh to replace the injured Issa Gatta, Kwara United struggled to find the net.
Their hopes were dashed when Uche Sabastine pounced on a defensive error from Akanni Akeem to double Akwa United’s lead and seal the victory.
After the match, frustrated Coach Sanni lamented his team’s missed opportunities.
“We ought to have won convincingly with our performance in the first 20 minutes, but my lads wasted scoring chances, and we paid the price,” he said.
With this result, Kwara United remain 13th on the NPFL table with 39 points after 30 games.
