Argentina booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 3-1 extra-time victory over 10-man Switzerland, setting up a last-four showdown with England.

Julián Álvarez produced the decisive moment in extra time, curling a stunning 25-yard strike beyond Gregor Kobel, after Switzerland had battled bravely despite being reduced to 10 men.

Lautaro Martínez sealed the victory late on, finishing a swift counterattack as the reigning champions kept alive their bid to retain the World Cup.

Argentina made a dream start when Alexis Mac Allister flicked Lionel Messi’s corner into the net after just 10 minutes, but Switzerland gradually wrestled control of the contest and deservedly equalised in the 67th minute through Dan Ndoye.

The Nottingham Forest winger combined neatly with Ricardo Rodríguez, before slotting his finish through Emiliano Martínez’s legs.

The match turned dramatically when Swiss striker, Breel Embolo was sent off midway through the second half. Initially, Leandro Paredes was booked for a challenge near the halfway line, but a VAR review under the mistaken identity protocol showed Embolo had simulated contact.

Paredes’ yellow card was rescinded, while Embolo, already on a booking, received a second yellow card and was dismissed, sparking protests from the Swiss camp.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Switzerland defended resolutely and forced Argentina to work for a breakthrough before Álvarez’s strike finally broke their resistance.

Lautaro Martínez added a third goal on the counterattack as Switzerland pushed for another equaliser, ensuring Argentina advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face England for a place in the World Cup final.
