The Anambra State government has spent N76 billion under the Choose-Your-Project initiative for the provision of infrastructure in 181 communities and construction of 66 markets in the state.
Ogbuefi Tony Nnacheta, the Commissioner for Information and Communications Strategy, who briefed reporters in Awka said while N20 million was spent by each community on the choose- your- project initiative, each market executed project cost N10 million.
He stated that 145 communities had already commenced the second batch of the Choose-Your projects, while 34 communities were yet to start, and regretted that some communities have not enjoyed the full benefits of the government initiative, noting “ Details of defaulting communities showed that 16 were in Anambra Central, nine in Anambra South and another nine in Anambra North senatorial zones.”
For the markets, Nnacheta said 43 projects had been completed, while 23 projects were nearing completion, explaining that the intervention was outside the normal government projects being executed in various parts of the state.
The Information boss also said that the state government had decided to give a facelift to the Enugu-Onitsha road by directing property owners along the road to build prototype fencing designed for all houses from the border town of Amansea through Awka to Onitsha.
Nnacheta added that government had insisted on the implementation of the ban on the operation of commercial motorcycle from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m, adding that communities and agencies had been directed to impound such motorcycles riding beyond the approved time.
