Unknown assailants reportedly killed and beheaded a policeman identified as Inspector Osang in Akwa Ibom State Wednesday night.

It was learnt that the gunmen invaded the police officer’s compound at 8.30 p.m, according to The Punch.

Osang was attacked and beheaded by more than 10 gunmen who veered to his compound on a lane connecting Enen Afaha and Afaha Ube in Uyo metropolis, an eye witness recounted.

The eyewitness reported that there was heavy shooting as residents and passersby scampered for safety and others to abandon their goods.

However, some people fear resurgence of cult war and reign of terror by rival groups, forcing most churches to cancel night programmes and some shop owners in Uyo to close before 8 p.m.

Confirming the incident, the state police command public relations officer (PPRO), Odiko MacDon, said the command has received the news of the murder of the police personnel describing it as very unfortunate.

“We have received that information and it is an unfortunate situation. Already, an investigation is ongoing and we are committed to ridding the streets of criminal elements. Again, we are not deterred and we are committed to ensuring that, criminally minded persons will account for their actions,” the Superintendent of Police stated.

The death of the police officer was the third killing incident reported in Uyo in January 2024.

Recall that a woman was also beheaded near the Banking Layout in Uyo. Another one was slaughtered and dismembered. ”This woman was killed, butchered, packed inside a bag and dropped by the roadside in Nwaniba Road, Uyo this morning. Her full name Victoria Bassey Edet and phone number were written on a piece of paper and dropped inside the bag. Vital body parts missing,”  reported Dr. Penking in his X handle.

Already, Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno had warned criminals, ”So, if criminals believe that Akwa Ibom State is a place for them to hibernate, I am warning them now that they will find this state too hot for them to stay. We have credible intelligence that some in our society, those living among us, are giving support, aid and comfort to these criminal elements just to upturn the peace in our state and use it as a narrative.”
