The joint National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has suspended the indefinite nationwide strike which entered its second day on Wednesday. The decision was reached at a meeting on Wednesday that deliberated on the outcome of an earlier interface with the Federal Government led by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu. Fear is gripping members of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, in Cross River State over the continued stay of a senior member of the body in kidnappers’ den. Professor Ekanem Ephraim who was kidnapped July 13 this year around the Atimbo axis of Calabar Municipality by unknown gunmen has remained in the kidnappers’ den in the past four months. Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has ordered the Inspector-General of Police and five others to pay N200 million as damages to a housewife in Uyo, Peace Ekom Robert, over the unlawful arrest and detention. The presiding judge, Justice Ntong Ntong gave the order Tuesday in a case of enforcement of fundamental rights brought by the applicant. Nigerian Army has rued over the reported suicide by its officer, Lieutenant Alphonsus Alexander Kalthy Bazza, in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The social media had claimed that the family of Bazza found his lifeless body hung on a tree with a mosquito net on Saturday night. Nationwide blackout is imminent as electricity workers shut the national grid over the declaration of an indefinite strike by organised labour unions. Reports monitored by Daily Post said Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), confirmed this exclusively on Tuesday. According to her, electricity workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), complied with the directives of the Nigeria Labour Congress to withdraw their services around 11:20 am on Monday, leading to a nationwide blackout. The Presidency has spit fire on the decision of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to embark on a nationwide strike beginning from midnight of November 13, 2023. The special adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga saw the decision as an “ego tripping move” and an act of unwarranted blackmail against the government.
