Nkan who stated this Monday during the unveiling of Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS) at the board’s headquarters, Banking Layout, Uyo said the public did not trust the leaderships on how the taxes were spent, hence they became negligent in tax payment.. Twelve political parties in Akwa Ibom have been cleared for the forthcoming local government election in the state. Announcing this at a press conference on Monday, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, the Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) said though 19 political parties exist in the state, 12 had submitted their list of candidates. “After publication of the list of cleared candidates, any person has a right to stop the commission from fielding the candidates for the election,” he noted. A University of Cambridge-trained Medical Geneticist, Mkpouto Pius, has sparked debate, asking Nigerian Government to ban schools from organising holiday lessons for their wards. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri has directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to sell petrol above the landing cost, which currently stands at N1,117 per litre. This, according to him, will prevent the smuggling of the products to neighbouring countries which sell above N1000. Lokpobiri, who stated this in Abuja, bashed security agencies for being complicit in the smuggling activities. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command said it raided a criminal hideout at Ring Road 3 in Uyo, busting a drug trafficking syndicate and arresting two suspects.
