By Franklyn Isong I had thought I could stay out of trouble this week. But no! The week has just started. Today is Tuesday. A lot have happened and are happening in Akwa Ibom state. I owe a duty to contribute to the development of my state, else I would have failed in my social responsibility. And so, this particular piece my spirit tells me, would not go down well in some quarters. I will be misconstrued and abused by my readers -majority of who are sponsored attack-dogs, who have sold out their consciences for a pot of porridge. But…
The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has berated the Presidency for what it termed the growing culture of intolerance of the opposition in the past three years. First spokesman of the coalition, Ikenga Ugochinyere while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, warned the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government not to plunge the nation into chaos and lawlessness. This was in reaction to a press release by The Kwankwaso Campaign Organisation, made available to journalists Tuesday, that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) suddenly turned down a request earlier approved for the declaration of Rabiu Kwankwaso, erstwhile Kano State governor for presidency…
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, Tuesday, identified delay in justice delivery as a major problem bedevilling the country’s judiciary. Osinbajo, who spoke at the ongoing Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Abuja, decried the pervading level of corruption in the justice sector, even as he called for stiffer sanctions against legal practitioners found culpable in acts of judicial malpractices. While acknowledging alleged lapses on the part of prosecuting agencies, the Vice President, said the judiciary must accept some responsibility for the seeming inability of the federal government to secure appreciable convictions. He headed a special session…
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Tuesday, re-affirmed its order stopping Multichoice Nigeria Limited from proceeding with its decision to increase DSTV subscription tariffs. The court, in a ruling by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, warned that no step should be taken to raise subscription fees for any of the DSTV packages, pending the determination of the suit that was lodged by the Consumer Protection Council, CPC. Justice Dimgba held that the restraining order it issued to that effect on August 20, is still extant and subsisting. “My order is still in force and I am entitled to believe that my…
Shouts for help! Screams of human beings oozed out from the raging inferno. They struggled to run out, no way. They jumped to free themselves from the ferocious fire, no assistance. And after few minutes, the shouts and screams died down. Five living, healthy persons have been burnt beyond recognition. And their charred bodies were later recovered from the rubble. What a gory sight as the victims were pulled out while the smoke was simmering. This was the fate that befell Ebenezer Ato Kessie, a pastor with Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He lost his wife, three children and mother-in-law in a…

Opinion I had the misfortune this morning of wading through a long epistle to the world by Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information on why the Udom Emmanuel administration has left the 4-star Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Ikot Ekpene to rot- three-and-a-half years after the current government in the state came into office. Though the hotel was built by the Godswill Akpabio administration, it belongs to Akwa Ibom government and people. Charles Udoh, information and strategy commissioner, argued with aplomb and vibrated with the excitement of a researcher that has just found a cure for the sickle anaemia,…
