Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increased to 24.08 per cent in July 2023, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The NBS stated this in its Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Inflation Report for July released in Abuja on Tuesday. According to the report, the figure is 1.29 per cent points higher compared to the 22.79 per cent recorded in June. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says its members will commence a nationwide strike without any formal notice if the Federal Government approves another increase in the pump price of petrol without conclusion of ongoing negotiations. The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said this at the ongoing African Alliance of Trade Unions meeting in Abuja Monday. Five passengers died while the driver survived in an auto crash at Abatete in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The crash which involved a commercial Toyota Sienna bus with registration number NZM-814ZL, reportedly occurred Saturday night. Eyewitness said the accident left some of the victims trapped inside and under the vehicle while bodies were littered on the ground before they were later rescued and evacuated. The leader of the Niger Junta, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, has agreed to explore diplomatic dialogue to resolve the political impasse in the country. Tchiani spoke on Saturday during a meeting with Nigeria’s intervention team comprising Islamic scholars led by the national chairman of Jamatul Izalatu Bida Waikamatu Sunnah, Bala Lau. Two persons died, and one sustained injuries in an auto crash involving a Mitsubishi bus and Hyundai Accent along Eket-Oron Road  on Sunday.  In a statement to journalists in Uyo on Sunday, the sector commander, FRSC, Akwa Ibom Command, Matthew Olonisaye, attributed the crash to speeding and route violation. The National Assembly has been taken to court over  what is termed “the unlawful plan to spend N40 billion on 465 exotic and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials, and N70 billion as ‘palliatives’ for new members,” SERAP said. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted three days of cloudiness, rainfall and thunderstorms across the country from Saturday to Monday.  NiMet said there would be cloudy skies on Saturday, August 12, with intervals of sunshine over the northern region and chances of early morning thunderstorms in states such as Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba.
