Celestine Mel A faithful friend in the Diaspora who takes my opinions seriously, rang me up yesterday, to ask about the raging debate regarding the newly enacted Supreme Traditional Ruler’s Council Law in Akwa Ibom State. It was the first indication to me, that people took the mass hysteria generated by the topic, seriously. I must confess that I pay little attention to matters bordering on the traditional institution in south-east Nigeria. The reason for this is not far-fetched. As a student of history, I learnt quite early that ‘monarchism’ was non-existent among our forebears until the advent of colonial…

Flanked his Deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi and Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, Eno allayed fears that it was not a witch-hunt but intended as a fact-finding measure to unravel why the plant has not been able to produce power optimally for electricity consumers in the state. Akwa Ibom governor, Pastor Umo Eno has decried the sorry state of Ibom e-Library seen to be abandoned by the past administration and the premises overgrown with weeds. Eno, who spoke this during media parley with journalists at Banquet Hall, Uyo on Friday, was sad that the multi-billion Naira project was allowed to rot and be underutilised. The Governor said his recent unscheduled visit to the project opened his eyes to the abandoned facility, but commended some young men who renovated the project and were using it to forestall complete rot. A professional association has called on Akwa Ibom Government to ensure that the completion of abandoned Ukanafun Cottage Hospital in the State rises beyond mere rhetoric. Contract for the construction of the 50-bed hospital was awarded along with others in 2008. Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno on August 13, 2023 had visited the site of the cottage hospital at Ikot Akpa Nkuk, the Ukanafun Local Government headquarters, pledging to look into the abandoned project. A press statement by the Secretary of Ukanafun Professionals’ Association (UK-Pro), Nsikak Ekanem saw the pledge as heart-warming but also worrisome. Related news After 15 years,…
A section of the Supreme Court was on fire on Monday morning, though no casualty was recorded, the court said. The Public Relations Officer for the Court, Mr Festus Akande, who spoke to Channels Television on telephone says the cause of the fire was electrical from one of the Chambers of the Justices and was put out with the use of fire extinguishers. Akande added that the stories making the rounds on social media that there are casualties are “fake news”. A source who chose to remain anonymous said the fire started around 6 am. It was…
As Akwa Ibom people celebrate 36 years of statehood, Governor Umo Eno, has vowed to maintain the existing progress and unity among the various tribal groupings in the State, calling on stakeholders to purge themselves of divisiveness and other tendencies inimical to the peace and growth of the state. This formed a major plank of Governor Umo Eno’s speech when he led top government officials, including the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, some past governors, and other dignitaries, to a special interdenominational Thanksgiving Service to round off the State’s 36th anniversary at The Apostolic Church, Obio Imo Street, Uyo. He…
The attainment of 36 years of statehood, in the face of competing interests by some powerful forces, is no mean feat. Age could be a figure, but the gradual realisation of the number to statehood remains an arduous task. From a conceptual traditional society, Akwa Ibom State, especially Uyo, the state capital, is evolving into a metropolitan status. Like a fulcrum, the cosmopolitan status is hibernating the ruralness of local government areas through concerted and egalitarian efforts in aggregating the dreams of our forebears and galvanizing them into a single purpose of development through the oneness of hearts.
