Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan early Monday set a World Record, twice, to win the 100m hurdles in style at the World Championships. Amusan’s victory and another great performance by Ese Brume meant that after labouring all week long with nothing tangible to show for their efforts, Team Nigeria ended their campaign at the World Championships in Oregon on a spectacular note; winning a gold and a silver medal on the final day of action. South Africa’s Banyana Bayana beat Morocco 2-1 on Saturday to win their first WAFCON title at the fifth time of asking. Hildah Magaia scored twice in eight minutes after the hour mark to hand South Africa a first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title as they beat hosts Morocco 2-1 in a grueling final in Rabat on Saturday. The Copper Queens of Zambia beat the Nigerian Super Falcons 1-0 to claim the bronze medal in the third-place match of the 2022 WAFCON, Friday. An own goal by Chiamaka Nnadozie in the first half led to the defeat and Zambia picking a medal for the first time. Twenty persons died and more than 50,000 houses and farmlands were destroyed by devastating flood that ravaged the state. The Executive Secretary of Jigawa State Emergency and Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Yusuf Sani Babura, told newsmen in Dutse, that annual flood affected 17 out of the 27 local government areas of the state. Babura said the disaster has thrown the lives of the communities into chaos as the death involved mostly children as a result of building collapse. The House of Representatives has re-gazetted controversial National Water Resources Bill, 2020, and shifted its second reading to September. The bill had re-emerged on the floor of the House of Representatives on June 29, 2022, amidst suspicions from members. The Federal Government sent the Bill to the National Assembly requesting its passage into law in 2017, but it was rejected. It seeks to transfer the control of water resources from states to the Federal Government. Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala and Senegalese Sadio Mane won big at 2022 Confederation of African Football’s awards ceremony in Rabat, Morocco on Thursday. Oshoala won a record fifth African Women’s Player of the Year Award while Mane, the Bayern Munich forward picked up African Footballer of the Year award for a second time. Oshoala, who plays club football for Barcelona, beat Grace Chanda (Zambia/BIIK Kazygurt) and Ajara Nchout Njoya (Cameroon/Inter Milan) to the award. A 31-year-old man in Akwa Ibom State has been sentenced to death for killing his 22-year-old girlfriend over accusation of infidelity. Ubon Udo Edet, a native of Use Ndon in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, was condemned Thursday by Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo presided by Justice Ntong Ntong. The court having found Edet guilty of murder of one Emem Effiok James from Ikot Anyan Itam in Itu Local Government Area sentenced him to death.
