The death toll from disastrous flooding in Western Europe rose above 150 persons on Saturday as rescue workers toiled to clear up the devastation and prevent further damage. Police said that more than 90 people are now known to have died in western Germany’s Ahrweiler county, one of the worst-hit areas, and more casualties are feared. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described unrest in the country this past week as a ”failed insurrection.” Addressing the nation Friday, Ramaphosa denounced the deadly incident, saying since the outbreak of this violence, at least 212 people have lost their lives. The former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Paul Usoro (SAN) has been has discharged and acquitted by Federal High Court in Lagos of the N1.4 billion fraud charge filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC). Justice Rilwan Aikawa held that the anti graft agency failed to establish any prima facie case against Mr Usoro that will warrant him to enter a defence. Ikot Ekpene High Court in Akwa Ibom State has sentenced to death two Nigerian Police officers and three others in Akwa Ibom for kidnapping an Uyo-based cattle dealer for ransom. The condemned Police officers- Corporal Friday Udo, a native of Ikot Inyang in Oruk Anam Local Government Area and Corporal Saturday Okorie of Ikot Etenge also in Oruk Anam- were said to have kidnapped one Alhaji Muhammad Umar Barkindo. Amid disagreement and rancour, the 109-member Nigerian Senate, Thursday, passed the Electoral Amendment Bill. The amended bill now empowers the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Assembly “to determine the use (or not) of electronic transmission of results of elections.” A total of 52 Senators mostly of All Progressives Congress voted for INEC to seek clearance from NCC before transmission of results electronically.
