A former militant leader in the Niger Delta, has said that the victory of the Bayelsa State governor-elect, Mr David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress, APC, over his opponent of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is a proof that God loves the people of the State. Reuben Wilson, in an interview with Straightnews reporter in Yenagoa on Wednesday, said the state governor, Seriake Dickson ruled the state like a despot, showing disrespect to elders, including the former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, hence the defeat of his candidate, Senator Douye Diri. While advising Dickson and the PDP not to contemplate…
By Akanimo Sampson Nigeria, Mali and Guinea cumulatively represent 50 per cent of over 68,000 West and Central African migrants stranded along the main migration routes since 2017 who have been assisted to voluntarily return to their countries of origin. The caseload is mainly in Niger (25,400) and Libya (29,900). On average, however, returned migrants are mostly young male (86 per cent) and two per cent are unaccompanied children. For migrants who have risked everything hoping for new lives outside their countries, returning is difficult. “I can say that those things that pushed me to leave my country, I can…
By Akanimo Sampson Along with the Haitian National Office of Migration (ONM in French), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Haiti, has monitored the repatriation of 340 Haitian migrants from The Bahamas. Of the repatriated migrants, 153 were interviewed by ONM upon their arrival at the Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitian airports. The persons repatriated indicated being mainly from the northern areas of Haiti (Nord-Ouest, Nord, and Nord-Est departments). These repatriations had been a common occurrence in the past but were temporarily halted at the beginning of 2019 because of the civil unrest and overall security situation in Haiti. After Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas on…
Jose Mourinho was on Wednesday appointed new Tottenham Hotspur head coach to replace the sacked of Mauricio Pochettino. The Portuguese former Chelsea and Manchester United manager signed a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season, the north London club said in a statement. Pochettino, 47, transformed Spurs’ fortunes since arriving from Southampton in 2014 and although he failed to win a trophy he took the club to the Champions League final for the first time in their history just six months ago. But the Argentine was sacked on Tuesday with Tottenham languishing 14th in England’s Premier League after picking…
Tottenham Hotspur sacked manager Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday following a miserable start to the campaign that has seen last season’s Champions League finalists slide down the Premier League table. Tottenham sit 14th in England’s top flight after picking up just three wins from their opening 12 games, and were eliminated from the League Cup in September by fourth-tier Colchester United. “The club can today announce that Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino and Antoni Jimenez have been relieved of their duties,” Tottenham said in a statement. Pochettino, 47, joined Spurs from Southampton in 2014 and transformed…
By: Rowland Udoh One of the topical issues President Muhammadu Buhari found time to address soon upon his arrival from his private visit to the United Kingdom is the raging matter of disengagement of some of the aides/appointees of the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. PMB is reported to have said that owing to the creation of a new ministry comprising some of the units previously under the Office of the Vice President, it became imperative that such persons in the affected units be moved to the new ministry. That is good talk and understandable from a man whose vocabulary…
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Tuesday, decried what it described as poor quality of roads in the state. The House committee members confronted the Commissioner for Works, Mr. Ephraim Inyang-eyen, when he appeared before the House’s panel to defend the budget for his Ministry as captured in the 2020 budget. Members of the relevant committee in-charge of the matter led by Mr. Mark Esset, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, revealed that “we have gone out on inspection across the 31 local government areas, but sadly, most roads constructed by the government are…

By Akanimo Sampson Last October in Geneva, Switzerland, delegates during the 31st session of the Committee of Participants held that South-South trade offers promising opportunities for developing countries in the face of uncertainties arising from heightened trade tensions and the impasse in multilateral processes. Revitalising South-South trade cooperation under the Global System of Trade Preferences (GSTP) is, therefore, an urgent task, they insisted. The GSTP was established in 1989 as a framework for preferential tariff reductions. Within the framework of the GSTP, three “rounds” of negotiations for preferential tariff reductions have taken place to date, including the latest São Paulo…
After five years of marriage, Sinach, the Nigerian sensational gospel singer, has welcomed her first child. The 46-year-old singer got married to Joe Egbu, a pastor in Christ Embassy Church in Nigeria on June 28, 2014. At the event, she coasted home $100,000 (N36 million) for winning the 2019 Song of the Year Award with her hit There’s An Overflow. “Thank you for that song.
