In February 2025, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan visited Berekette FM Radio…
Israel Umoh In the heart of Akwa Ibom, where the echoes of ambition resonate through the corridors of governance, the saga of model schools unfolds—a tale of vision, neglect, and the enduring hope for transformation. The story begins with the Akwa Ibom ex-Governor Obong Victor Attah, whose administration embarked on construction of three model secondary schools in the three Senatorial Districts in the state. These institutions were envisioned as beacons of excellence, equipped with modern facilities to nurture the minds of future leaders. However, over two decades later, many of these schools remain abandoned but converted, their promises unfulfilled, and…
Liverpool made mince meat of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday to clinch a first title since 2020 and only their second in 35 years. The Reds, 15 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with four games left, are now level with bitter rivals Manchester United as the joint most successful club in English top-flight history. The Reds’ last title, five years ago, was slightly anticlimactic as it came during the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning Anfield was nearly empty when the trophy was presented due to restrictions. Tens of thousands of fans swarmed around Anfield in the build-up to kick-off in anticipation…
The recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) by state governors is nothing short of a disgrace to Nigeria’s democracy. What we are witnessing is not a political realignment but a craven betrayal of the electorate—a wholesale abdication of responsibility by politicians who have turned public service into nothing more than a cheap game of self-interest. Let’s be blunt: these governors are not defecting because of any principled ideological differences. They are not walking away from the PDP out of any genuine desire to advance policy or serve the people better.…
Israel Umoh April 25 arrives like an old guest with a rehearsed greeting. It is called World Malaria Day. Governments will issue statements. Experts will share graphs. NGOs will post videos of mosquito nets being hung with delicate ceremony over frail iron beds. There will be talk of progress. There will be talk of hope. But malaria—the ancient enemy—will still be here tomorrow morning. The world has lived with malaria for centuries. And perhaps that’s the problem. We have grown used to it. Like the proverbial house rat that dodges every trap and returns with even more arrogance, malaria has adapted…
As part of activities to mark the World Malaria Day observed globally on April 25, the Pharmaceuticals Society of Nigeria (PSN), has distributed malaria preventative drugs to market women and traders in Uyo aimed towards supporting efforts to eradicate malaria in Nigeria. The exercise, which took place at Akpan Andem market in Uyo on Friday, had no fewer than 500 units of free malaria preventive drugs distributed to the market women who filed out in their number to benefit from the gesture. The rally, organized by the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA), a pet-project of the late wife of Governor…
The death of Pope Francis marks the end of a transformative era—not just for the Catholic Church, but for the global conscience. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, he shattered centuries of precedent: the first Latin American pope, the first Jesuit to lead the Church, and the first to choose the name Francis, after the saint of poverty and peace. He walked the talk, trading papal opulence for humility. He lived simply, washed the feet of prisoners and refugees, and made the Vatican a platform for the voiceless. In him, Catholics saw not a distant pontiff but a pastor.…
Pope Francis was buried inside his favourite Rome church after a funeral mass in St Peter’s Square, the Vatican said on Saturday. Francis, who died on Monday aged 88, was laid to rest during a 30-minute ceremony which started at 1:00 pm (1100 GMT) at the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in the Italian capital. The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, gave the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the go-ahead to arrest and detain six promoters of Crypto Bridge Exchange, CBEX, over alleged investment fraud to more than one billion dollars. Justice Emeka Nwite, who gave the order after the EFCC’s lawyer, Fadila Yusuf, moved an ex-parte motion to the effect, said the detention would be pending the conclusion of investigation of the alleged offences and possible prosecution. “I have listened to the submission of the learner counsel for the applicant, EFCC. I have also gone through the affidavit evidence with exhibits…
