The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Uyo Thursday confirmed Udom Emmanuel of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the duly elected Governor Of Akwa Ibom State. The tribunal, therefore, dismissed case filed by Mr Nsima Ekere, All Progressives Congress, APC, Akwa Ibom governorship candidate. Ekere had challenged the election of Emmanuel during the March 9 governorship election. President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, to proceed on an indefinite leave. A statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey, said the leave is to allow the conclusion of the investigation being carried out by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. A bill for an Act to establish a centre for cancer prevention and other related matters scaled second reading Thursday. The bill, sponsored by Ossai Nicholas Ossai (PDP-Delta), was passed at a plenary presided over by the speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila. Only two women of the four who applied for Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN this year, have been successful. Out of the 117 legal practitioners who applied for the SAN rank this year, only 38 including the women succeeded at the end of a rigorous screening exercise. Among the successful applicants, three are academics, while 35 are advocates. The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, LPPC, had on July 5, stated identities of the 38 lawyers that were conferred the SAN rank. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Tanko Mohammad, Tuesday urged Judges in the country to redouble their effort and ensure that cases pending before their various courts were speedily disposed off.
