Fabio Fognini became the first Italian to win an ATP Masters 1000 title on Sunday at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, defeating Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 38 minutes. “I’m really, really happy. Nothing to say,” Fognini said. “I have to keep calm, maybe take a shower, relax, and think about this because it’s something incredible.” The 13th seed converted four of five break points to become the lowest seeded player to lift the trophy since fellow No. 13 seed Gustavo Kuerten’s title run in 1999. Fognini will rise to a career-high No. 12 when the latest ATP…

Three of the island’s churches were hit by explosions as they celebrated Easter Sunday. Some 450 people were also injured in the attacks. The Shangri-La, Kingsbury and Cinnamon Grand hotels and one other, all in the capital, were also targeted. A national curfew has been put in place “until further notice” and social media networks have been temporarily blocked. A foreign ministry official said 27 foreign nationals were among the dead.
Manchester United’s hopes of finishing in the Premier League top four took a huge blow after a rampant Everton side thrashed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side 4-0 at Goodison Park. Richarlison and Gylfi Sigursson put the Toffees two up at the break and, despite changes from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the second half, strikes from Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott condemned United to their worst defeat since October 2016. Solskjaer made three changes from the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona, with Ashley Young the most high-profile absentee after his error at the Camp Nou. It proved to make little difference, however, as…

Phil Foden’s first Premier League goal returned Manchester City to the top of the table as they overcame Champions League conquerors Tottenham at Etihad Stadium. The 18-year-old’s diving header, created by Sergio Aguero, after only five minutes ensured the reigning champions maintained the pressure on rivals Liverpool before their match at Cardiff City on Sunday. It was, however, a nervous performance in a game a far cry from the drama of Wednesday’s European game here as City relied on goalkeeper Ederson to make several crucial saves. They also lost key midfielder Kevin de Bruyne to injury. Foden gave City the…
Rafael Nadal crashed to Fabio Fognini in the Monte Carlo Masters semi-finals on Saturday, the Spanish clay court king swept aside 6-4, 6-2, to end his bid for a 12th title. The shock result leaves Italian 13th seed Fognini facing unseeded Serb Dusan Lajovic in Sunday’s unscripted final. Fognini, who beat Nadal three times all on clay in 2015, stopped a 25-set win streak in the principality for the world number two. The last man to take a set off Nadal in Monte Carlo was Britain’s Kyle Edmund in 2017. Fognini ended Nadal’s Monte Carlo reign on the fifth match…

He has also decided to make it obligatory…
Cristiano Ronaldo, Saturday, became the first player to win top-flight league titles in England, Spain and Italy after Juventus clinched a record-extending eighth successive Serie A crown with a 2-1 win over Fiorentina. After the disappointment of Uefa Champions League elimination at the quarter-final stage to Ajax on Wednesday, Juve found themselves behind to a sixth minute goal from Serbian defender Nikola Milenkovic. Alex Sandro levelled for Juventus in the 37th minute, before German Pezzella’s own goal eight minutes after the break gave the defending champions the lead. That proved to be the decisive goal of the game as Juventus…
