Members of Nigerian Legion in Akwa Ibom State Council are enjoined to assist government in addressing security challenges in the state.
Dr. Ini Adiakpan, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, who made the call after the election and swearing-in ceremony of the legionnaires at the Conference Room of the ministry in Uyo urged them to contribute their quota in resolving the security problems in the state.
”The old saying that old soldiers, they never die. We still remember that it was through you, we maintained the territorial integrity of our states and local government areas.
”And apart from that, that you will bring your experiences and your training in handling the security problems of the state. Feel free to remain relevant wherever you are, and also assist constituted authorities in matters of security to ensure that it runs well,’’ Adiakpan said.
According to her, ”On the part of government be rest assured, everything that has to do with the legion, the governor of this state, would handle everything. And on your own part the followers, please give these ones (elected) support, because they are here because of you, and you are here, because you have them at the helm of the affairs.
“The newly elected are to pilot the affairs of the legion for the next four years. I want to inform you that we are doing this courtesy of His Excellency, Deacon Udom Emmanuel. He is the person behind the election of these officers.
”If we did not receive his blessings, we will not be able to conduct it. So I want to thank him for his fatherliness and thoughtfulness towards the Nigerian legion.
”Not forgetting that they had rendered service for us, and I know, they will maintain that same relationship, and also help in ensuring that security of the state, and the security of the local government are being properly handled.’’
While congratulating them on the election, she thanked the legionnaires for the support to the ministry.
In his acceptance speech, Capt. Daniel, the state Chairman thanked his colleagues for re-electing him and the ministry for the cooperation so far given to them, pledging to discharge his duty well to the satisfaction of all.

During the election, Capt. Joseph Daniel from Eket, emerged with a total of 27 votes, as the Legion’s Chairman.
Capt. Friday Etim Okodi from Abak polled 31 votes to become the state vice chairman; while Capt. Edet Idung from Nsit Atai garnered 29 votes, to emerge as the treasurer.
The newly elected were sworn into office by Barr. Bassey Ekah.
