Meanwhile, the police in Lagos state have reportedly arrested two persons at the Lekki tollgate as Nigerians plan to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the October 20 EndSARS protest that turned bloody.
According to BBC, one of those arrested claimed he was a journalist while the other person stormed the tollgate with a placard with the intention to stage a protest. The two persons are currently in police Black Maria vans.
The state police command had released a statement on Tuesday warning residents of the state against staging any street protest. According to the statement, only indoor and virtual events will be allowed.
However, the events that occurred on the evening of October 20 cascaded terribly into an orgy of violence the next day, necessitating the state government to declare a 72-hour lockdown in view of growing violence in Lagos.
Today marks a year Nigerian forces opened fire on peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Nigeria’s commercial city, Lagos.
The youths have maintained their energy to remember those murdered in last year demonstration as they remember those who lost their lives while asking for change and the end of police brutality in Nigeria.
Parts of the demand of the protesters included salary increment for the police and adequate compensation for protecting lives and properties; Setting up an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reported police misconduct within a period of 10 days.
Others were Justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensations for their families; immediate release of all arrested protesters and carrying out psychological evaluation of all disbanded SARS operatives before they can be deployed (this should be verified by an independent body).
