In his Facebook page tagged TRIUTE TO AN ANGEL, Dr. A. John Ukpe wrote ‘‘No one could fathom the depths of my affliction, nor did they even perceive the presence of illness within me. We had just concluded a profound worship seminar at Victory Tabernacle, Abak, where I held the esteemed role of pastor.
‘‘The guest minister had departed for Uyo, while I, in my weakened state, made a detour to bid farewell to an elder before embarking on the journey home to my family residence, a mere two kilometers away. Alas, no vehicle awaited me at the motor park. The clock struck 11.00pm, and the sleepy town of Abak slumbered peacefully.’’
According to him, ‘‘Alone, I trudged along the desolate road, my body consumed by a scorching temperature of 39 degrees centigrade. Weakness permeated every fiber of my being, causing me to stumble and sway like an inebriated soul. Dizziness overcame me, compelling me to slow my pace to a measured steps.
‘‘No physician’s diagnosis was necessary to ascertain the impossibility of reaching my destination. I was acutely aware of it. Surrendering myself to prayer, I entrusted my fate to the hands of God Almighty. As I trudged along I kept calling on the name of Jesus.
‘‘The street, known as Ikot Ekpene Road, lay devoid of any signs of life. I lone figure-utterly alone. Suddenly, a car whizzed past, heading in the opposite direction, scarcely capturing my attention amidst the turmoil of my plight. After a short while, it came to a halt beside me, and the driver beckoned, “Enter!”
I opened the door of the vehicle and settled inside.
“To what destination are you bound?” the driver inquired.
“Just down the road, approximately two kilometers hence,” I replied.
“Very well,” came his response,’’ the immediate Director-General of AKBC recounted.
As I commenced expressing my gratitude, he interjected, “I understand that you do not recognize me, but I am intimately acquainted with you.”
In the dimly lit interior, I turned to scrutinize his countenance, yet even as I glimpsed his features, I failed to recollect any encounter or connection we may have shared.
“I am Engineer Akanimo Edet. We were fellow students at Holy Family College,” he revealed.
I left Holy Family decades ago. How do you recognize a guy you had not seen in decades and who was not in your inner circle in college at close to midnight? Though the name and visage escaped my memory, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that God had dispatched him as a savior in my moment of peril. From that day forward, the Engineer and I cultivated a profound bond, and I never ceased to bear witness to the divine intervention that had sent him to rescue me from impending doom.
A few days ago, a message crossed my path: “You are cordially invited to serve as a member of the Engineer Akanimo Edet Burial Committee.”
An angel is a celestial messenger dispatched by the Divine, and on that fateful day, Akanimo embodied the very essence of such a divine emissary. How does one bid farewell to an angel?
”Adieu, brother. Good night! May God who sent you that night to me, give you eternal rest in the bosom of Abraham,’’ the Pastor of Insight Bible Church penned.
No date has yet been fixed for the funeral of the departed.
