University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State is accused of dipping its finger into ‘admission racketeering’ pot forcing students under the Basic Studies programme of the institution to kick against the act, Straightnews has gathered.
Frustrated over the failure of the institution to offer them admission into their dream courses, the students have openly vented their anger.
This is coming barely two weeks after the aggrieved students protested to the school management at the main campus seeking resolution to what they see as ‘admission racketeering.’
One of the students, who spoke under anonymity by the sideline accused the school management of not doing the right thing.
She explained that, “having completed my one-year basic studies programme and passed the prescribed examinations (JUPEB), I expected to be admitted by direct entry through JAMB into year two in any faculty/departments of your choice.
“Instead, what we are getting is the university luring us with courses we did not apply to read, even having passed JUPEB examinations with appropriate scores.
“There is serious contention right now in the admission process of Uniuyo and, what we understand is that, there is a racket going on already; where politicians and businessmen are alleged to be influencing admissions with money for their children and wards.
“Like me I wanted to read Law but the university wants to give me Political Science and Public Administration. Is that an alternative to Law? I do not think so. We are likely to challenge the school in the court for this unruly process.
“So, we strongly condemn this development and strongly appeal to the Vice -Chancellor, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo and the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) to save our future by looking into it,” she stated.
Straightnews newspapers learned that candidates seriously affected are those who applied to read Law, Medicine and Pharmacy.
The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) did not respond to inquiries by this reporter, while effort to speak with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo was also rebuffed, as he neither respond to calls nor reply to text.
The Admission Officer, Mr. Okuete and the Director of Information, Mrs Blossom Okorie when contacted on the telephone were reluctant to speak on the matter.
