Rumours that swirled the social media on the renaming of Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo also known as Nest of Champions have been doused by Akwa Ibom State government.
Few hours ago, the news desk of Straightnews was inundated with calls from various quarters and persons outside the state that Governor Udom Emmanuel administration has renamed the stadium in the wake of the defection of the former Governor Akpabio from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
A statement issued by Charles Udoh, the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, attributed the false report to the handiwork of some unscrupulous elements.
‘’The report is not only false but mischievous with an intent of misleading the unsuspecting public and generating skewed sentiments,’’ Udoh said.
He stated that the government is laden with a high level of integrity and would not descend to such lowly heights of renaming the stadium.
The commissioner reiterated the State Government’s commitment to continue its single-minded pursuit of the avowed goal of people-oriented governance and sustainable development of Akwa Ibom State. He added that the Akwa Ibom Project is beyond any personal interest.
The 30,000-capacity sitting stadium was officially inaugurated on November 7, 2014 but Governor Udom Emmanuel renamed it Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on May 29, 2015 after the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly had passed a resolution into law.
