House to carry out oversight function on LG Transition Committees
Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has declined to pass a resolution granting the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno’s request for extension of tenure of the Local Government Transition Committees in the state for six months.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Udeme Otong during a plenary session last Thursday, said that the House would not pass a resolution until it has carried out an oversight function by assessing the activities of the Chairmen in the last five months in the 31 local government areas of the state
According to the Speaker, “It would be necessary for the House to first carry out an inspection of the activities of the local government councils and assess their performances, since there are currently no elected councilors to perform this function.”
The House took the decision through a motion moved by the Chief Whip and member representing Mbo State Constituency, Rt. Hon Effiong Johnson and seconded by Oruk Anam State Constituency representative, Hon Samuel Idiong.
To this end, he has mandated the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, headed by Rt. Hon. Mfon Idung to lead a facility tour across the 31 local government areas of the state to assess the performances of the sitting officials before granting tenure extension to them.
Recall that Akwa Ibom Governor Eno swore in the transition members of various local government areas on December 7, 2023 and are expected to be dissolved on June 7, 2024.
