Suspected gunmen killed a traditional marriage guest in a failed attempt to abduct a member representing Esit Eket/Ibeno State Constituency in Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Usoro Akpanusoh.

Akpanusoh had joined other guests at the traditional marriage ceremony at Idung Ikpetuen in Uquo community of Esit Eket Local Government Area at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 4.

An eye witness account said while lawmaker wanted to board his vehicle, the gunmen arrived at the venue and attempted to abduct him.

It is said that as the lawmaker hurriedly escaped, they unleashed anger on the crowd by shooting sporadically.

However, one Raphael Emmanuel was caught in the chest by the bullet and died on the spot while another person is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Confirming the incident, the lawmaker said heavily armed men attempted to abduct him as he was about entering his car after the traditional wedding ceremony.

Akpanusoh who thanked God for protecting and bringing him safely out from the ugly situation prayed for the repose of the soul of the young man who died in the process.

The matter had been reported to the police who are investigating the matter.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko MacDon, a superintendent of police is yet to confirm the story to Straighnews.
