A marketing staffer of Globus Bank, Ikorodu branch, Lagos State who died in one of its toilets parted with a sorrowful note: ‘‘I can’t bear the pain anymore.’’

Amarachi Ugochukwu, the 32-year-old marketing staffer of the first generation bank, died on Monday, 8 January, 2024.

For every 100,000 people in Nigeria, there are 9.5 self-murders, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Ugochukwu reportedly committed suicide leaving note in her diary with a bottle of ‘Snipper’ insecticide beside her.

She was discovered to have gone missing from her desk which was unusual and a search party was conducted and her lifeless body was eventually discovered in a toilet of the bank.

According to reports, she left her telephone on the table and it kept ringing without answer which prompted her colleagues to start looking for her.

A search for her showed that one of the toilets was locked from behind, but it was forced open and her lifeless body was discovered.

Upon sighting her on the floor of the toilet, the management of the branch immediately called a medical doctor who confirmed her dead.

The bank reported the matter to the police in Ikorodu, who removed the corpse and deposited it at Ikorodu General Hospital.

However, the deceased left a note in a diary on her table before she allegedly took her life.

“Nothing is working in my life. My figures are low. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting harder. My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up. The future doesn’t seem bright at all. I see extreme hardship. I can’t bear the pain anymore.

“I’m sorry, mom; I am sorry, dad. I’m sorry, Meme, Okwe, Toto Nazor, Chuchu, and Ifunanya. Lord, have mercy on me!” Ugochuckwu wrote.

Survived by her parents and siblings, her family has been informed of the tragic incident.

AAU graduate attempts to kill self

Earlier, a graduate of Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, Edo state, Precious Ogbeide, had attempted to kill himself due to the alleged refusal by the university to release his results after five years.

The university had allegedly refused to issue Ogbeide and several other students their results after graduating in 2018.

Man takes fatal decision after huge loss

One Onoh Chukwuma Richard took his own life for allegedly losing N2.5m to betting in Umuahia, the Abia state capital.

Onoh took his life because he could not bear the shame and pressure from those he borrowed money from.

Why more African men kill themselves

Meanwhile, the Africa Centres for Diseases Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has revealed what is responsible for the high rate of self-murder among African men.

The Advisor, Non-communicable Diseases, Injuries and Mental Health (Africa CDC), Naeem Dalal, said it is necessary to stop cultural stereotypes that prevent African men from seeking emotional and mental wellness help.
