Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, said he made N10 million monthly income selling bean cake, popularly known as akara, and bread before he entered joined politics.

Announcing this at the September edition of the state’s monthly summit on Tuesday, Eno said he started the business from a shop he still owns, where he sold bread and akara to workers and residents in the area.

“We had, we still have that shop there, and I started selling akara and bread,” the governor said.

He explained that the business later evolved into what he described as an akara burger, combining bread and akara for customers.

“We’re doing bread, akara burger. We open the bread, we put akara for you,” Eno said.

According to him, workers at ExxonMobil were among the regular customers who patronised the business, particularly in the mornings.

“People going to work in ExxonMobil will buy it in the morning, take coffee. We start a coffee shop, and then they will take it,” he said.

Eno said the akara and bread business generated substantial monthly income, yielding no less than ₦10 million.

“Every month, that akara business and that bread used to give me not less than ₦10 million,” he said.

“Not less than that,” the governor added.

“So, Ibahase Fonam and Nakedo committed,” Eno referenced individuals.

    Backlash by social media critics

Some social media critics have punched holes in the video and statement credited to the governor.

An X user, Newry Edosa, questioned how the business could have generated N10 million monthly.

“Akara and bread, a month, and 10m for the same sentence?? All these politicians and their suffer head mentality wey dem wan use shackle Nigerians,” Edosa said.

X user Daniel Regha, in a separate reaction, sarcastically suggested that Eno would have had little financial reason to leave such a lucrative business for politics.

“So he left his profitable akara and bread that was fetching him millions per month, to join politics that salary-wise pays less. How noble of him. Akwa Ibom people are so blessed,” he said.

Another social media user, Theo Ayodeji, said there could be more to the repeated references to akara business by politicians.
