A student of Adiaha Obong Secondary Commercial School, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Miss Eti-eno Uko Mkpong has emerged the star prize winner of Ibom Jewels’ On-line Essay Writing Competition as part of the activities to mark the 2024 Int’l Day of the Girl-Child.
Miss Mkpong, an SS2 student scored 89 per cent to defeat 24 other students spread across eight public secondary schools in the three Senatorial Districts of the state.
The star-prize winner was adjudged to have shown originality, clear and logical presentation using engaging language in her work.
The concluding part of the Essay, according to competent and professional scorers, was highly capturing, inspiring, captivating and emphatically expressing the topic “My Voice is Relevant in the Sustainable Development of Akwa Ibom State.”

Miss Eze Joy Ugwudike and Miss Ifeoma Immanuella Anyadike both from Cornelia Cornelly College (CCC), Uyo took second and third positions, having scored 83 per cent and 76% respectively.
The winning prizes of N50,000, N30,000 and N20,000 respectively, certificates and gifts were presented to them while consolation gifts were also given to participating students and certificates of participation to schools.
The Convener of Ibom Jewels’ Community (IJC) and Publisher of Ibom Jewels’ Compendium, Mrs. Eme Atakpo said the Organization had, as its way of giving back to the society, chosen the Girl-Child as its Pet Project, among other activities.
The aim, according to Mrs. Atakpo is to groom, mentor, encourage, challenge and admonish young girls to be focused and aspired o write their names boldly in the sands of time.
Principals of the participating schools hailed the Jewels’ initiative and foresight in choosing to impact the life of the girl-child positively while pledging their continued support.
The Principal of Adiaha Obong , the winning school, Mrs. Theresa Essien-Ibanga expressed joy and excitement over the victory and appreciated the organizers for a job well done.
The Chairman planning committee of the event, Jewel MariaStella Mkpong had earlier led in the observation of a minute silence for the departed jewel and first Girl-child of the state, Pastor Patience Umo Eno.
Mrs Mkpong thanked stakeholders for contributing to the success of the event.
