Former Director-General of MKO Abiola Campaign Organisation, Hope ’93, Senator Jonathan Zwingina, has said that some associates of the late Chief Moshood Abiola, who served in the government of late General Sani Abacha, retd, had the blessings of Abiola to do so.
Zwingina, who said this on Channels’ Sunrise Daily, made the revelation on the strength of claims that Ambassador Babagana Kingibe betrayed Abiola by serving in the Abacha administration as Minister of Internal Affairs.
His words: ‘’Nigeria is a very free country. Anyone that feels concerned should go to court. I believe that Obasanjo had the best opportunity to do what has been done being the principal beneficiary of the annulment of June 12. A meeting was held in my house where Abiola supported the idea of his associates serving in that government.
”So, those, who are saying that Kingibe betrayed Abiola, do not know what they are saying. All of them that served in the government had Abiola’s support.’’
Confirming Zwingina’s position in a chat with Vanguard, Babatope, who was the Minister of Transport in that regime, said: “I wrote a book, The Abacha Regime and The June 12 Crisis: The Struggle for Democracy, where I detailed all that happened. Sen Zwingina said the truth by saying that it was the decision of the SDP that we should go and participate in the Abacha regime.
”The participation did not have any link with whether June 12 was recognised or not. Many of us who went there, Kingibe, myself, the late Olu anoguruwa and Lateef Jakande, went there on the basis of the fact that the leaders of our party took a unanimous decision that we should participate in that regime. Abiola himself supported it. He was even saying that we should serve the regime seriously.’’
