The 10th National Assembly will be inaugurated on June 9

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged as the majority party in the 10th Senate with 59 members-elect.

This follows the completion of supplementary elections by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted on February 25.

Before the election, the party had 55 senators-elect but added four seats during the supplementary polls obtained from Plateau Central, Yobe South, Sokoto North and Sokoto East senatorial districts.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which now has 36 Senators-elect will play the role of a main opposition party.

Before last Saturday’s poll, PDP had 33 senators-elect, but the party gained three more seats from Sokoto South, Zamfara Central and Kebbi North Senatorial districts after the supplementary poll.

While the Labour Party (LP) controls eight senatorial districts, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have two seats each. The Young Progressives Party and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have one seat each.

Although APC was in the majority during the election of the senate president and the deputy senate president in the eighth Senate, PDP significantly influenced the choice of the presiding officers.

Consequently, Ike Ekweremadu, a PDP Senator, was elected the Deputy Senate President while Bukola Saraki of the APC emerged the Senate President.
