An Akwa Ibom-born man who beheaded his 90-year-old grandmother and absconded with her hard-earned money is in the State police custody awaiting trial in court.
The suspect, one Nkereuwem Umoren Ekpo from Adiasim Ikot Udo Village in Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state was arrested for the murder of his grandmother, a 90-year-old Martina Udoudo Akpan from Onuk Nkop Ekpo Village.
The state Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara who broke the news during a press conference on Friday at the Akwa Ibom Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, said ‘‘On 25/02/2024 at about 1400Hrs, one Nkereuwem Umoren Ekpo ‘M’ of Adiasim Ikot Udo Village in Essien Udim L.G.A, was arrested for the murder of his grandmother, one Martina Udoudo Akpan ‘F’ of Onuk Nkop Ekpo Village, Aged about 90years.
‘‘The suspect was alleged to have used a machete to cut his grandmother’s neck while they were cutting cassava stem in the farm which eventually led to her death and untied the sum of N16,750 from the deceased wrapper and absconded.’’

Ayilara further announced that ‘‘On the 06/02/2024, operatives of Itu Division, arrested one Idris Shehu ‘M’ of Katsina State but residing at Itu L.G.A for killing one Dogo Alhaji ‘M’ of Itu Head Bridge, Itu L.G.A on the 04/02/2024 at about 2000Hrs following a previous altercation that ensued between the deceased and the suspect.
‘‘The suspect threw the corpse of the deceased and the matchete which he used to stab the deceased into the river at Itu Head Bridge. Suspect confessed to the crime.
According to him, ‘‘On the 13/03/2024, following reliable Intelligence, operatives of Okobo Division arrested one Okon Edet ‘M’ of Uruting Village in Okobo L.G.A for killing his father, one Chief Edet Okon Oyoho, ‘M’, aged 75 yrs, of same address, by beating him mercilessly with machete, leading to his demise. Suspect confessed to the crime.
‘‘His reason for perpetrating the heinous crime was that he got information that his father, now late, who owns many parcels of land in their community in Okobo L.G.A., has sold many of the lands including the one he gave to him as his son to build a house. So, he confronted his father and confirmed that the information was true and he asked his father for the money he got from selling the land and the father replied that the buyers hadn’t pay, So, he got angry and beat him to death.’’
On kidnapping, he recalled that ‘‘On the 11/3/2024 at about 1000Hrs, a report was received from one Enobong Sampson ‘F’ of Nung Oku Village in Ibesikpo Asutan L.G.A that her Sister, one Imaobong Francis Sampson was kidnapped and that the Kidnappers were demanding for a ransom of four million naira.
‘‘As a result, Operatives of Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the command embarked on an intense and Intelligence-driven investigation so as to track down the perpetrators and rescue the victim. On 12/3/2024 at about 2315Hrs, the said purported victim, one Imaobong Sampson ‘M’ and her boyfriend, Beltus Ebong ‘M’ were arrested in her hideout at Mbierebe Obio Village, Ibesikpo Asutan L.G.A. She confessed to have conspired with her boyfriend, one Beltus Ebong ‘M’, Dominic Friday Charlie ‘M’, her sister, Enobong Sampson ‘F’ and Inyene Ime Akpan now at large to proclaim her kidnap in order to raise money from her aunty who is based abroad.”
Again, he announced that ‘‘On the 9/2/2024, at about 0600Hrs, following a credible intelligence report, Operatives of Anti-Robbery squad of the Command swiftly mobilized to Afia Nsit Village, Eket L.G.A and arrested one Christopher Bassey Assam ‘M’, Sunday Friday Arthur ‘M’ and one Emmanuel Kokoette Ekong ‘M’, all of Afia Nsit Village, Eket L.G.A.
‘‘One English Double barrel gun, two live cartridges, one revolver pistol and fifteen pieces of large ammunitions were recovered from the suspects. The suspects admitted ownership of the guns and the ammunitions which are suspected to being used but could not state how and what they were using the guns to do. Investigation is still in progress.’’
The Commissioner of Police, therefore, thanked the state government, sister security agencies and the good people of Akwa Ibom State for their support and collaboration that led to the arrest of the perpetrators of the crimes.
